Topographic contour map of Matterhorn (4478m)

The Hornli Ridge is the standard route on the Matterhorn, the most recognizable peak in the Alps at 4,478m. Attempted by thousands each summer, fewer than half reach the summit — fixed ropes, exposed rock ridges, and rapidly changing weather demand solid alpine experience. Day one climbs from Zermatt to the Hornli Hut at 3,260m. Summit day follows the northeast ridge via the Solvay emergency bivouac to the Italian Cross, returning to Zermatt via full descent. A licensed IFMGA guide is strongly recommended.
