Topographic contour map of Margherita Peak (5109m)

The Rwenzori Central Circuit is the classic route to Margherita Peak (5,109m) on the Uganda–DRC border, the third-highest summit in Africa. This 7-day trek climbs through an extraordinary succession of afro-alpine ecosystems — rainforest, bamboo, heather, moorland, and the bizarre giant lobelia and groundsel zone — before ascending the glaciated summit via the Elena Hut at 4,541m. All visitors require a licensed guide and park entry fee; porters are strongly recommended on this notoriously muddy trail.

Margherita Peak 7-Day Rwenzori Central Circuit

Seven-day guided circuit through Africa's most biodiverse mountain ecosystem to the glaciated summit of Margherita Peak at 5,109m.

Overview

The Rwenzori Central Circuit is the classic route to Margherita Peak (5,109m) on the Uganda–DRC border, the third-highest summit in Africa. This 7-day trek climbs through an extraordinary succession of afro-alpine ecosystems — rainforest, bamboo, heather, moorland, and the bizarre giant lobelia and groundsel zone — before ascending the glaciated summit via the Elena Hut at 4,541m. All visitors require a licensed guide and park entry fee; porters are strongly recommended on this notoriously muddy trail.

Day 1: Nyakalengija to Nyabitaba Hut

Register at the Rwenzori Mountaineering Services office in Nyakalengija and begin hiking through tropical rainforest. The trail crosses the Mubuku River on a log bridge and climbs steadily through moss-draped trees to Nyabitaba Hut.

Day 2: Nyabitaba Hut to John Matte Hut

The trail enters the bamboo and giant heather zone, crossing several slippery ridges and rivers to reach John Matte Hut. The notorious Rwenzori mud begins in earnest today — gaiters and trekking-poles/" class="glossary-link" title="Trekking Poles">trekking poles are essential.

Day 3: John Matte Hut to Bujuku Hut

Enter the surreal giant lobelia and giant groundsel zone as the trail climbs the Bujuku Valley past Lake Bujuku. Bujuku Hut sits at the foot of the peaks with the Stanley, Speke, and Baker massifs visible around the valley.

Day 4: Bujuku Hut to Elena Hut

Climb steeply from Bujuku through rocky alpine terrain to the Elena Hut perched on the moraine below the Stanley Glacier. Acclimatize at the hut, fit crampons, and review the glacier route with your guide for the next day's summit push.

Day 5: Elena Hut to Margherita Peak and Kitandara Hut

Pre-dawn glacier crossing on the Stanley Plateau leads to the 5,109m Margherita Peak, then a dramatic descent across the Scott Elliot Pass and down to the twin Kitandara Lakes and hut. This is the most demanding and rewarding day of the circuit.

Day 6: Kitandara Hut to Guy Yeoman Hut

Descend the southern circuit trail through heather moorland and bamboo forest to Guy Yeoman Hut, passing the Freshfield Pass viewpoint. The trail is steep and often very muddy on the descent.

Day 7: Guy Yeoman Hut to Nyakalengija

A long final descent through all ecological zones back to the Nyakalengija trailhead, passing through bamboo, rainforest, and farmland to complete the full circuit.
