Snowdon via Llanberis Path — August 2021 Summit Report¶

Wales's highest peak in August is an experience in organised chaos and unexpected beauty in equal measure. We started in drizzle from Llanberis village, ascending through a low cloud layer that clung to the lower moorland. At 800m, we punched through into brilliant sunshine above a white cloud sea — Snowdonia's famous cloud inversion. The summit ridge was bathed in light, the Hafod Eryri cafe was open, and on the clearest days you can see Ireland. Descended via the same path, back into the cloud and drizzle — as if the mountain was keeping its secret.

Weather: Classic Welsh weather — started in drizzle, broke through cloud at 800m to blue sky above. 10°C at summit with a brisk westerly. Snow: No snow in August. Wet grass and quartzite scree on lower sections. Temperature: 10°C to 18°C Wind: Brisk westerly 25–30 km/h on the summit ridge

Difficulty Assessment¶

The Llanberis Path offers the most gradual gradient of Snowdon's six walking routes. The main challenge is the sheer number of hikers — August weekends are exceptionally busy. Navigation is trivial but route-finding in thick cloud on descent can disorient first-timers.
