Mount Kosciuszko via Main Range Walk — December 2023 Summit Report

Kosciuszko is the gentlest of the Seven Summits — a pleasant walk through alpine meadows and past glacial lakes. The Main Range loop trail from Charlotte Pass is 22 km but gains only 400m. The real beauty is the delicate alpine ecosystem — endemic wildflowers, rare pygmy possums, and the headwaters of the Snowy River. The metal walkway protects fragile vegetation while providing accessible alpine hiking.

Difficulty Assessment

Australia's highest peak is a gentle walk from Charlotte Pass along a raised metal walkway. The Main Range loop adds distance and passes glacial lakes but is never technically difficult. The challenge is the remoteness and weather variability.
