Mount Fuji via Yoshida Trail — July 2024 Summit Report

Mount Fuji's Yoshida Trail is a pilgrimage — over 300,000 people climb it annually. The 2024 season introduced access gates and a ¥2,000 fee to manage crowds. We stayed at Station 8 and woke at 3 AM for the summit push, joining a headlamp procession of hundreds. The sunrise (goraiko) from the crater rim was transcendent — a moment shared with strangers that felt deeply communal. The ohachimeguri (crater circuit) revealed the volcanic heart of the mountain.

Difficulty Assessment

Japan's highest peak is a straightforward trail hike with mountain hut accommodation. The 2024 access fee and gate system reduced crowding. The main difficulty is altitude sickness from rapid ascent and the monotonous switchbacks through volcanic gravel.
