Kilimanjaro via Rongai Route — May 2023 Summit Report

The Rongai Route offers Kilimanjaro with wilderness — approaching from the Kenya side through pine forest and open moorland, with Mawenzi Tarn as one of the mountain's hidden gems. May is technically the long rains season but the northeast approach stays dry. Six days of genuine solitude on Africa's highest peak, culminating in a calm summit night and Uhuru at dawn. The crater traverse from Gilman's Point adds a final hour of extraordinary high-altitude scenery.

Difficulty Assessment

Non-technical but demanding altitude. The Rongai Route approaches from the northeast (Kenya side) and is typically drier — valuable in May. Mawenzi Tarn camp is a highlight that Machame and Marangu trekkers miss entirely.
