Huascarán Sur via Normal Route — July 2022 Summit Report

Huascarán Sur is the crown of Peru's Cordillera Blanca and the highest peak in the tropics. The six-day climb from Musho base camp traverses spectacular glaciated terrain. The Garganta passage between the two summits is a narrow, windswept corridor that feels like crossing a bridge between worlds. The summit views extend across the entire Cordillera Blanca, revealing dozens of glaciated 6,000m peaks stretching to the horizon.

Difficulty Assessment

Peru's highest peak requires glacier climbing skills. The Garganta (throat) — a narrow col between Norte and Sur peaks — is the crux, exposed to wind and with steep ice slopes on both sides. Crevasse navigation above Camp 2 requires careful routefinding.
