Gran Paradiso via Normal Route — June 2024 Summit Report

Gran Paradiso is the friendliest 4,000m peak in the Alps — a straightforward glacier walk with no technical difficulties. Starting from the Vittorio Emanuele Refuge, the route crosses the glacier in about 4 hours. We shared the route with ibex (the park was created specifically to protect them). The sunrise from the summit with the Madonna statue silhouetted against Mont Blanc is a quintessentially Italian alpine moment.

Difficulty Assessment

Italy's highest peak entirely within its borders. The normal route is a glacier walk — roped travel required for crevasse risk but no technical climbing. The Madonna statue on the summit is the iconic finish. An ideal first 4,000m peak.
