Cotopaxi via Normal Route — August 2023 Summit Report

Cotopaxi in a whiteout is a different mountain from the one in the photographs. Clear at José Ribas Refuge, the glacier turns hostile above 5,200m — 60 km/h wind, zero visibility, and crevasses invisible beneath fresh snow. The guide stops the group at 5,450m and turns everyone around. There is no argument. Cotopaxi's conical perfection generates its own weather system and August's dry season guarantee means nothing on the glacier. Planning a return in June or July with better odds is the honest next step.

Weather: Clear at Jose Ribas Refuge, whiteout conditions above 5,400m. Sustained 60 km/h wind. Zero visibility — the summit not visible at any point during the ascent attempt. Difficulty Assessment

Cotopaxi's perfectly conical glacier generates its own weather. Whiteout conditions make crevasse navigation genuinely dangerous. The guide's decision at 5,450m — 450m below the summit — was correct and non-negotiable. Even in August dry season, the mountain can shut down without warning.
