Mt. Olympus (Mytikas Peak) via E4 Trail — September 2022 Summit Report

Greece's highest peak sits at the intersection of mythology and genuine alpinism. The E4 trail from Prionia winds through old-growth beech forest before emerging onto the limestone Plateau of the Muses. We overnighted at Spilios Agapitos refuge (2,100m) and set off for Mytikas at 6 AM. The Kakoskala couloir — a narrow, exposed limestone scramble — delivers you onto the summit of the Throne of Zeus with startling suddenness. The Aegean shimmers far below. We descended by noon, ahead of the day's thunderstorms. A mountain that exceeds all expectations.

Trip Overview

Mountain: Mount Olympus (2917m) Date: September 14, 2022 Duration: 2 days Party Size: 3 Outcome: Summit

Conditions

Weather: Hot at Prionia trailhead (30°C), cool at Mytikas (8°C). Crystal-clear skies with afternoon thunderstorm threat that we successfully avoided by descending by 13:00. Snow: No snow in September. Limestone scree on upper approaches. Temperature: 8°C to 30°C Wind: Light morning calm; gusty 20–30 km/h by early afternoon

Difficulty Assessment

The Kakoskala couloir to the Mytikas summit involves Grade II+ scrambling on exposed limestone — hands-on and airy but non-technical. Route-finding confidence is required. Afternoon thunderstorms are a serious hazard; early starts are essential. The overnight at Refuge A is strongly recommended.
