Mont Blanc via Gouter Route — July 2023 Summit Report

Two days to the Roof of Western Europe via the most popular French route. The Grand Couloir must be crossed fast, early — rockfall is not a theoretical risk on a hot July afternoon. Gouter Hut at 3,835m is crowded but functional. Midnight start on the Dome du Gouter, the Arete des Bosses ridge lit by headlamp, and 4,808m at dawn. The Alps extending to the Alps in every direction is a view that justifies everything.

Difficulty Assessment

The Grand Couloir rockfall is statistically one of the most dangerous passages in the Alps — speed and timing are critical. The Arete des Bosses demands crampon confidence on a narrow snow ridge. Altitude affects more than expected on a peak this prominent.
