Topographic contour map of Mount Olympus (2917m)

Mount Olympus, home of the ancient Greek gods, rises to 2,918m at Mytikas Peak — the highest point in Greece. The classic 2-day route from Litochoro (293m) ascends through the Enipeas Gorge and forest to Spilios Agapitos Refuge (Refuge A) at 2,100m for the overnight. The summit day climbs steeply through the 'Throne of the Gods' ridge to Mytikas via the technical Kakoskala couloir — a Grade II+ scramble demanding sure-footedness and exposure tolerance. A National Park entry fee applies; the mountain is the oldest national park in Greece. Season runs May to October; heavy snow lingers into June.

Day 1: Litochoro to Spilios Agapitos Refuge

From Litochoro town, follow the E4 trail up the dramatic Enipeas Gorge through Mediterranean maquis, then pine and black fir forest. The path steepens above the gorge floor to open alpine meadows near Refuge A. Meals and bunks are provided at the refuge; advance booking is essential in July and August.

Day 2: Refuge A to Mytikas Summit and Return to Litochoro

Early start up the Zonaria traverse to the 'Throne of the Gods' ridge. The Kakoskala couloir — a steep, loose-rock gully — leads directly to the Mytikas summit at 2,918m. Carefully descend the couloir and return via the Enipeas Gorge to Litochoro. Allow extra time for the final descent on tired legs.
