Terrain Overview
View Mountain →Gran Paradiso (4,061m) is the only entirely Italian peak above 4,000m and an ideal first 4,000er in the Alps for those without technical alpine experience. The normal route from Pont in the Aosta Valley ascends through Gran Paradiso National Park — Italy's oldest — past ibex, chamois, and golden eagle habitat to the Vittorio Emanuele II Refuge at 2,732m. Summit day crosses the Laveciau Glacier to the iconic bronze Madonna statue at the rocky summit at 4,061m. Crampons and ice axe are required above the refuge; a guide is recommended for those new to glacier travel. The peak is a perfect stepping stone before attempting Mont Blanc or Monte Rosa.

Gran Paradiso 2-Day Normal Route Expedition¶
Two-day ascent of Italy's only entirely Italian 4,000m peak — national park wildlife, Vittorio Emanuele refuge overnight, and the Laveciau Glacier to the bronze Madonna summit.
Overview¶
Gran Paradiso (4,061m) is the only entirely Italian peak above 4,000m and an ideal first 4,000er in the Alps for those without technical alpine experience. The normal route from Pont in the Aosta Valley ascends through Gran Paradiso National Park — Italy's oldest — past ibex, chamois, and golden eagle habitat to the Vittorio Emanuele II Refuge at 2,732m. Day 1: Pont to Vittorio Emanuele II Refuge¶
Drive from Pont village and park at the trailhead. The path ascends through Gran Paradiso National Park pastures, where ibex are routinely seen at close range. The Vittorio Emanuele II Refuge offers excellent alpine meals, dormitory bunks, and a stunning view of the glacier above.
Day 2: Refuge to Gran Paradiso Summit and Return to Pont¶
3 AM start from the refuge onto the Laveciau Glacier with crampons. The glacier is crevassed but well-marked by summer. The final rocky summit ridge leads to the bronze Madonna statue at 4,061m. Return to Pont for the afternoon. The ibex on the descent are often even bolder in the morning light.
