Topographic contour map of Mount Everest (8849m)

The Everest Base Camp trek is the world's most iconic high-altitude trek, reaching 5,364m at the foot of the Khumbu Icefall and the optional Kala Patthar viewpoint at 5,545m — the finest non-climbing panorama of Everest's summit (8,849m). This 14-day itinerary follows the classic Lukla–Namche–Tengboche–Dingboche–Lobuche–Base Camp corridor with two dedicated acclimatization days at Namche Bazaar and Dingboche. No technical climbing skills required, but the thin air above 4,000m demands fitness, patience, and respect.

Everest Base Camp 14-Day Classic Trek

The 14-day classic Everest Base Camp trek from Lukla through the Khumbu valley, with Kala Patthar sunrise as the crowning viewpoint experience.

Overview

Day 1: Kathmandu to Lukla, Trek to Phakding

Fly from Kathmandu to Tenzing-Hillary Airport (Lukla) — the world's most dramatic airstrip at 2,860m — then descend gently along the Dudh Kosi ('Milk River') to the village of Phakding. A short first day to ease into the altitude.

Day 2: Phakding to Namche Bazaar

Cross the iconic Hillary Suspension Bridge over the Dudh Kosi gorge and climb steeply through rhododendron forest to Namche Bazaar — the 'gateway to the Himalaya' and the Khumbu's main trading hub. The first glimpse of Everest above the ridge just before town is a defining moment.

Day 3: Acclimatization Day in Namche Bazaar

Mandatory rest and acclimatization day. The recommended hike is to the Everest View Hotel at 3,880m for the best accessible panorama of Everest, Lhotse, and Ama Dablam. Visit the Sherpa Culture Museum and browse the Saturday market (if timing aligns).

Day 4: Namche Bazaar to Tengboche

A varied day descending to the Dudh Kosi then climbing to Tengboche Monastery — the spiritual heart of the Khumbu region and one of the most photographed locations in the Himalaya. Ama Dablam (6,812m) looms magnificently above the monastery. Attend the evening puja (prayer service) if available.

Day 5: Tengboche to Dingboche

Descend briefly from Tengboche before climbing steadily through Pangboche (home of a famous Yeti skull relic) into the true alpine zone above tree line. Dingboche sits in a wide yak-grazing valley with spectacular views of Island Peak (6,189m) and Lhotse (8,516m).

Day 6: Acclimatization Day in Dingboche

Second critical acclimatization day. Hike to Nagarjun Hill (4,800m) for extraordinary views of Makalu (8,485m) to the east and the entire Khumbu valley. Rest, hydrate well, and eat a hot meal — the days ahead at 5,000m+ demand the body be primed.

Day 7: Dingboche to Lobuche

The trail climbs to Thukla Pass (4,620m) where memorial cairns and chortens commemorate climbers who have died on Everest. A sobering but moving place to pause. Above, the lateral moraine of the Khumbu Glacier rises steeply to Lobuche — a basic but well-positioned high-altitude camp.

Day 8: Lobuche to Gorak Shep

A short but demanding day walking on the Khumbu Glacier moraine at over 5,000m — every step is a conscious effort. Gorak Shep is the last settlement, a cluster of basic lodges on an ancient glacial lake bed. Acclimatize and prepare mentally for base camp.

Day 9: Gorak Shep to Everest Base Camp and Return

The goal: Everest Base Camp at 5,364m. The trail crosses the lateral moraine and descends onto the glacier itself. In climbing season (April-May) the coloured tents of expeditions fill the camp. The Khumbu Icefall — the first obstacle for all Everest climbers — is visible above. Return to Gorak Shep for the night.

Day 10: Gorak Shep to Kala Patthar and Descent to Pheriche

Pre-dawn start to climb Kala Patthar ('Black Rock', 5,545m) for the finest Everest sunrise view accessible without climbing permits. Everest, Lhotse, Nuptse, and Pumori fill the horizon. Then descend all the way to Pheriche (4,270m) — breathing noticeably easier with every hundred metres of descent.

Day 11: Pheriche to Namche Bazaar

Long but enjoyable descent retracing the familiar trail through Tengboche and down to Namche. Energy and appetite return noticeably with each kilometre of descent. Namche offers hot showers, bakeries, and a welcome return to relative comfort.

Day 12: Namche Bazaar to Lukla

The final full trekking day, retracing the approach route through the Dudh Kosi valley. Arrive in Lukla by early afternoon for a celebration dinner with porters, guides, and fellow trekkers.

Day 13: Lukla Buffer Day

A mandatory buffer day built into all responsible Lukla itineraries. Tenzing-Hillary Airport is frequently closed by cloud, wind, or visibility — sometimes for 2–3 days. Use the time to rest, sort gear, or explore the surrounding village.

Day 14: Lukla to Kathmandu (Flight)

The 30-minute flight from Lukla to Kathmandu is the final act — a panoramic farewell to the Himalaya. The trek is complete.
