Mt. Kosciuszko via Summit Walk — January 2024 Summit Report

Summiting Australia's highest peak in the height of summer is a surprisingly gentle experience — but one that carries real significance. We rode the Thredbo chairlift to 1,957m, then followed the raised metal walkway across wildflower-carpeted alpine meadows. The summit itself is marked by a small memorial shelter and a trig point. On a clear January day, the views stretch across the Snowy Mountains in every direction. This is the most accessible Seven Summits peak by a wide margin — and none the less rewarding for it.

Difficulty Assessment

The Summit Walk from Thredbo chairlift is a graded metal walkway for much of its length, designed to protect the fragile alpine vegetation. The path is fully accessible and requires no technical skill, though the 18 km round trip from Charlotte Pass is a longer alternative for those seeking a more rewarding experience.
