Mount Elbrus via South Route — July 2023 Summit Report

Elbrus from the south is the most accessible of the Seven Summits candidates — cable cars reach 3,800m, snowcats can go to 4,800m. But underestimating this mountain is dangerous — more people die on Elbrus than on many technically harder peaks. Our 5-day itinerary with proper acclimatization worked perfectly. The twin summits — west and east — connected by a broad saddle, create one of the most recognizable mountain silhouettes in the world.

Difficulty Assessment

Europe's highest peak (if you count the Caucasus as European) is technically easy — a snow walk from the cable car or snowcat. The danger is weather: Elbrus generates its own storms and whiteouts are deadly. The altitude catches many people off guard.
