Mount Cook (Aoraki) via East Ridge — January 2023 Summit Report¶
Aoraki/Mount Cook dominates the Southern Alps — a massive peak rising above the Tasman Glacier. The East Ridge involved two days of approach, a night at Plateau Hut, and a pre-dawn summit bid. The summit ice cap has collapsed significantly since the famous 1991 rock avalanche that removed the top 10m. The views of the Hooker Valley and Tasman Glacier from the summit revealed the full scale of New Zealand's alpine landscape.

Difficulty Assessment¶
New Zealand's highest peak is a serious mountaineering objective. The East Ridge is technically easier than the Linda Glacier route but still requires proficiency in glacier travel, ice climbing, and mixed terrain. Weather windows are notoriously brief.
