The Seongpanak approach to Hallasan summit is the gentler of the two authorised routes, winding through temperate broadleaf forest before emerging into dramatic sub-alpine scrubland. We caught the peak of autumn colour — Jeju's maple-dominated forests blazing orange and red on the lower sections. The summit reward is the Baengnokdam crater lake: a perfectly circular mirror reflecting the sky of South Korea's highest point. The 13:30 departure gate is strictly enforced — we turned around with 45 minutes to spare. A genuine high-quality mountain day.
Trip Overview¶
Mountain: Hallasan (1950m) Date: October 22, 2022 Duration: 1 days Party Size: 2 Outcome: Summit
Conditions¶
Weather: Cool and crisp, 8°C at summit, clear skies. Baengnokdam crater lake was perfectly still and reflected the surrounding peaks. Snow: No snow. Autumn leaf litter on trail below 1,500m; bare rock above. Temperature: 8°C to 18°C (base to summit) Wind: Moderate 20–25 km/h at summit plateau
Difficulty Assessment¶
The 9.6 km one-way distance and mandatory 13:30 summit departure gate add time-management pressure beyond the physical demands. The trail is well-maintained with boardwalks in the sub-alpine zone, but the sheer distance makes this a committed undertaking for a day hike.
