Diamond Head via Crater Trail — February 2024 Summit Report

Diamond Head is the defining silhouette of the Honolulu skyline, and the crater hike from inside the volcanic tuff cone is one of Hawaii's great short adventures. Our timed entry slot was 8 AM — ideal for morning light and moderate temperatures. The paved path winds up through the dormant crater, ducks through a WWII-era tunnel, climbs a spiral staircase inside the old fire control station, and emerges onto the summit parapet with Waikiki Beach and Diamond Head's famous curve framed below. Twenty minutes of hiking for one of the Pacific's great panoramas.

Difficulty Assessment

The paved Crater Trail is accessible to most visitors, though the tunnel section, spiral staircase, and final external staircase to the summit bunker add variety. Timed entry reservations are now mandatory and must be booked in advance. The heat can be taxing without shade.
