Namcha Barwa reaches 7,782 metres at the eastern end of the Himalaya in the Tibet Autonomous Region of China, where the range bends sharply and the Yarlung Tsangpo River carves one of the deepest gorges on the planet around its base. Regarded as the high point of the eastern Himalayan syntaxis, it was among the last major mountains to be climbed, with a first ascent only in 1992. It is a fold mountain raised where the Indian and Eurasian plates converge most acutely. The site classifies it grade 5, its most extreme tier. Persistent monsoon cloud, sheer relief, and remoteness make it one of the least-frequented of the world's high summits.
